Ventilator is a public space by Amsterdam Alternative. It consists of 2 different (but connected) spaces: the Ventilator cinema and Ventilator bar. Both are located on the 2nd floor of the OT301 (Overtoom 301, Amsterdam) and being used for a wide variety of (sub)cultural, activist, social and community programming.
Programming
We have a Ventilator programming team to initiate/organise film/docu screenings, music related events, workshops, presentations, reading groups, podcast recordings, theatre, comedy and various discussion programs. Besides our own programming we are also open for external ideas and programs. If you are looking for an affordable and cosy space to organise a film screening, book presentation, workshop etc. feel free to contact us and check possibilities.
Non profit
Amsterdam Alternative is a non profit organisation. We do things because we like doing them and because we think they are valuable for the city and community. We also think it’s very important to show that it’s possible to get out of the commercial mainstream and organise affordable, inspiring, experimental, (sub)cutural programming.
Being non profit doesn’t mean that we can do everything for free. We have costs (space rental, equipment, promo etc) so we need to make some money in order to to able to do this. However, it will never be our aim to charge as much as possible in order to make as much profit as possible. If profits are made they go back into the Ventilator or other Amsterdam Alternative projects.
Volunteers
Amsterdam Alternative and the Ventilator are based on volunteers. We don’t have the budget to pay people. Not because we don’t value their efforts and talents but to keep things affordable and experimental.
To make the Ventilator and other AA projects possible we are always in need of motivated volunteers. If you are interested in joing our diverse and very international Ventilator team (programming, tech, bar, hospitality) then please let us know.
When visiting the Ventilator cinema keep in mind that all crew is helping voluntary. Everybody is doing their best to make it an inspiring and friendly place. We need your cooperation to make it a pleasant experience for everyone.
Location
The Ventilator cinema and bar are located on the 2nd floor of the OT301 on the Overtoom 301 in Amsterdam. The OT301 is a free space combining housing, work spaces and public functions (concerts, food, gallery, cinema etc). The building was squatted on the 14th of November 1999 and bought by the collective in 2006. Before the OT301 collective squatted the building it was the Film Academy of Amsterdam. The Ventilator cinema was the cinema of the Film Academy so we ould say that our cinema has quite some history.
The name Ventilator refers to the fact that the bar space was the ventilation machine room of th ebuilding in the past. Besides the historical link we also like the reference to ventilating ideas and opinions.
Accessibility
The Ventilator bar and cinema are on the 2nd floor of the OT301. Unfortunately there is no elevator in the OT301 which means that the accessibility is not perfect for those with physical problems. We are very sorry for this inconvenience.
