On this page we publish photo reports from events, happenings, protests and other interesting events that relate to Amsterdam Alternative and the topics that we are interested in.
Sky is a one hour real-time performance created and performed by Katie Duck (Amsterdam) and Sharon Smith (Devon), in collaboration with cellist Ben Roberts (Devon). The piece is performed with text, movement, music and a film that fills the room with silent, slow moving images of skies.
Performed on Sunday 30 November, Ventilator cinema.

On Saturday 20 September we closed the Vrije Ruimte Festival 2025 at Het Groene Veld in Amsterdam Noord. We had a varied program with fire shows, cabaret/theatre, live performances, electronic music and great food. Thanks to: Eboman, Kleine Crack & Slagter, Know V.A., Zohar, BlackBeach, Stealth Piano, Dead Fish Fuck, Acabaret, Duo Oscar Jan Hoogland - Jannes Deurvorst for their great shows.

On Sunday 7th of September event #09 of our Vrije Ruimte festival 2025 took place at the Plantage Dok. From 13:00 till 22:00 hrs there was a wide variety of great performances, tours, open studios, art, talks and delicius food and drinks.

On Saturday 5th of July we had Vrije Ruimte Festival event #08 at Treehouse NDSM. The event started with a diverse ‘Art in action’ program of workshops and guided tours in the afternoon, followed by delicious food by Tits out 4 snacks and an exciting Makan Disko jam session with multiple talented musicians on various instruments.

On Saturday 28 June 2025 we organised a Vrije Ruimte Festival event at OCCII. The event was called First Timers Festival and on this night we witnessed the first live performances of five new bands. All these bands got together in the past few months and had the chance to join a series of instrument workshops organised by the First Timers Festival.

On Saturday 21st of June Amsterdam Alternative hosted multiple stages, installations and performance areas on the big RING party. Our area was collaboration with multiple venues, artists, collectives and volunteers of the Amsterdam Alternative network.
Although it was extremly hot it was very exciting and rewarding to see all those happy faces.
The ‘OP DE RING’ event was organised to celebrate the 750th birthday of Amsterdam. More then 200.000 people showed up for the event.

On Sunday 15th of June a massive demonstration called ‘Trek de rode lijn’ (Draw the red line) was held in The Hague. More then 150.000 people demonstrated against the genocide in Gaza, and in particular against our Dutch governments lack of policy towards the aggressor.

On Sunday 15th of June we had our 6th Vrije Ruimte Festival event at Filmhuis Cavia.
The program started with the screening of Johan van der Keuken’s masterpiece ‘Amsterdam Global Village’ (1996). In typical van der Keuken style, he strings together many different stories, from attending a Ghanian funeral to dancing at the Roxy club, and from a traditional fishmonger in the Jordaan to the living room of a Chechen refugee.
After the screening we had a public discussion with: Wouter Pocorni, LI Yuchen, Yannesh Meijman, Isis van der Wel, Ivo Schmetz
The talk was centered around the question: What is the role of free spaces in creating and/or maintaining a diverse, inspiring and affordable global village?

Despite the rain thousands of people turned up at Dam square on Saturday 24th of May for the demonstration against our extreme right government. This demo was organisaed by more then 240 organisations to scream out loud for a our civil rights, an open democracy and a more solidair society.

On Thursday 8 May 2025 we had 6 fantastic experimental, postpunk, darkwave bands playing at the Vrije Ruimte Festival Prom night in Cinetol.
Live perfromances by Prom Vagabond, L’orne, Daddy Unchained, Dear Omen, Pim Piet and Nils Keppel.

On Thursday 10th of April we organised the 3rd Vrije Ruimte Festival event of 2025. The event took place at Ru Paré and was a public discussion about initiating the first cooperative night club of Amsterdam. After an intro presentation by Amsterdam Alternative we talked about wether a cooperative structure would work for a night club and how an initiative like this could be realized in Amsterdam.

On Saturday the 5th of april 2025 the second Vrije Ruimte Festival event took place at Bajesdorp/GROND.
It was day full of performances, live music, experiment, live radio, workshops, reading groups, drinks and an amazing food installation. Thanks to all the efforts of the GROND artist collective for making such a diverse and exciting program.

On the 29th of March 2025 the Vrije Ruimte Festival kicked off at the OT301.
In the afternoon a couple of episodes of the docu series ‘Capital B’ were shown in the Ventilator Cinema followed by a public talk about the docu and the Round Table initiative that was set up in Berlin. In the Ventilator bar we hosted the expo opening of Ruud de Kort and The Junction (culture kitchen) on the ground floor served food with a live performance by Los Calxunxos Tuyos. In the studios we enjoyed some amazing DJ sets by I-F, Marcelle (Another Nice MEss) and Sarkawt Hamad and live prformances by Mathilde Nobel and De Kraters.

Op 20 maart 2025 vond de feestelijke opening van Helling X plaats. Na een intensieve renovatie zijn in de voormalige scheepshelling X op het NDSM-terrein in Amsterdam-Noord 17 nieuwe werkruimtes gecreëerd, waar 23 kunstenaars zich hebben gevestigd. Het nieuwe collectief bestaat uit beeldend kunstenaars, muzikanten, theatermakers, fotografen, ontwerpers, bouwers, performers, illustratoren en zelfs een schoenmaker.

On Sunday 15th of December Louise Fresco gave a lecture called Kruisbestuiving: kunst en kennis? with music from Maarten Ornstein, Michael Moore, Marieke de Bruijn, Julija Hartig, Johan van Iersel, Mattijs van de Woerd and Bart de Vrees.
The event was happening at Splendor. They celebrated their 11th birthday and the 101th birthday of the Badhuis (building).

On Wednesday 11 December the Ventilator cinema on the 2nd floor of the OT301 hosted ‘Geographies of Desire - Queer Archives Vol. 2’. An event with short films, exhibition, performance, music and more.

On November 2nd NDSM Treehouse celebrated their 5th anniversary with a special afternoon/evening event. From 17:00-03:00 hrs they had a program of performances, talks, workshops, music, drinks and more.

On Saturday 20 October 2024 Amsterdam Alternative once again organised one of the after parties of the ADEV street parade.
From 20:00 till 03:00 Wilco Prinsen (live), Teqmun, French II and Lenxi played tyheir sets in a full, steamy, buzzing OT301.

For many years Amsterdam Alternative is already cooperating with the Friekens beer brewery. Peter Lange (one of the AA photographers) went passed the brewery in Amsterdam Noord to capture the brewing and labeling proces of the tasty Vrij Beton beer (APA) that they always brew for Amsterdam Alternative.

The legendary ADEV street parade was held on Saturday 20 October 2024 and once again a great event. Soundsystems and people left from Dam square through town to end at the Westerpark. This year the the demo was organised to give attention to and value our right to be able to demonstrate.

On Friday 27th and Saturday 28th of September 2024 Maakgemeenschap De Hoop in Zaandam organised another edition of De Hoopening. A 2 day event with workshops, innovation, music and arts.

On Sunday 29th of September 2024 Bajesdorp celebrated the official opening of their building. After many years of lobbying, planning and building they managed to realise a fantstic new building.

On September the 13th a group of people gathered at Surinameplein for a nfuneral ceremony to mourn the loss of their homes at SUP.
About 70 artists will be evicted from their homes in order to creat another Urban resort broedplaats.

On 7 and 8 September 2024 the Phoney Island Fest was organised at the Nieuw en Meer.
The Phoney Island Fest offered a wide range of activities, including the exhibition 'Supernova' in the Kate pavilion, over 40 open studios, the Klein Kinder Fest, and live music performances during Jazz Bites in the Kantina. Visitors can continue to marvel at the diversity of art and creativity on the grounds.

Tijdelijk gesloten
Op zondag (11 augustus) brak er brand uit bij de Buurtboerderij. Er is veel schade en het dak is helemaal verwoest. Het traject van opruimen, gedeeltelijke sloop, wederopbouw en herinrichting gaat minimaal een jaar duren en de verwachting is nu dat ze op z’n vroegst pas vanaf oktober 2025 weer gasten kunnen ontvangen.
Ze zijn druk bezig om te kijken of we in de tussentijd een andere, tijdelijke locatie kunnen betrekken.

Performances at Ventilator cinema OT301 on 16 and 17 August 2024.
Multidisciplinary Real Time Composition is a wild field when a live public is present. The spirit of the performers is to welcome collaboration, enjoy unpredictability, and to welcome publics, with all their senses and histories and opinions, to engage. These Performances were characterised by playfulness, diversity, experimentation and risk.

On Sunday 14th of July this beautiful ship was put to water at Buurtwerkplaats Noorderhof.
The ship has been constructed collectively and will become a platform for everyone to organize exhibitions, lectures, performances, workshops, concerts, etc.

Woonopstand voerde op 11 juni 2024 actie tegen de Nederlandse vastgoedprofiteurs bij de landelijke vastgoedbeurs Provada.
Woonopstand is een landelijke coalitie van actiegroepen die zich verzetten tegen de wooncrisis zoals de Bond Precaire Woonvormen, Het Woonprotest en Wij Weigeren de Huurverhoging.

Op 1 juni vierde wooncoöperatie De Warren haar eerste verjaardag met een mooie festival dag! Een dag vol muziek, dans, workshops en creativiteit.

Op zaterdag 25 mei 2024 bracht een optocht met ruim 16 wagens kunst naar de straat: Voor het derde jaar op rij bracht de Culturele Stelling van Amsterdam (CSA) een feestelijke ode aan haar stad met het Amsterdamse Kunst Corso. Om 13.00 uur ging de stoet van start in het Vondelpark en reed daarna via het Museumplein, Leidsestraat, Dam, Rozengracht, Haarlemmerplein naar het Stenen Hoofd.

Op Koningsdag - zaterdag 27 april - 2024 blokkeerde Extinction Rebellion voor de derde keer de A10 om te eisen dat ING per direct stopt met alle financiering van, en dienstverlening aan, de fossiele industrie.

Bewonersorganisaties kwamen in actie om aandacht te vragen voor het enorme achterstallig onderhoud, de aangekondigde huurverhogingen en de doorlopende verkoop van sociale huurwoningen. De mars vertrok op zaterdag 20 april 2024 om 14:00 uur vanaf verschillende startpunten in Amsterdam-Noord en eindigde om 15:00 uur op het Buikslotermeerplein met een manifestatie en sprekers.

Op zaterdag 30 maart 2024 om 12:00 uur deed Extinction Rebellion een poging tot een derde A10-blokkade, met een concert van XR Musicians. Ruim 80 muzikanten voerden het slotkoor van Bachs Matthäus Passion uiteindelijk niet uit op de A10 maar bij het voormalige ING kantoor. Met het verdriet dat in deze muziek klinkt, stond het koor en orkest stil bij de vele soorten die al zijn uitgestorven door de klimaatontwrichting. Door de aandacht te vestigen op wat onherroepelijk verloren is, wilden de muzikanten duidelijk maken dat er geen tijd te verliezen is.

Op donderdag 14 maart demonstreerde XR Justice Now! bij het hoofdkantoor van Booking.com in Amsterdam. De groep kwam in actie tegen de financiering en legitimering van illegale nederzettingen in Palestijnse gebieden door Booking.com. De demonstratie volgde op een eerdere actie bij Booking.com op 16 februari 2024, waar 60 rebellen de in- en uitgangen van het hoofdkantoor vijf uur lang hebben geblokkeerd.

Op zaterdag 9 maart protesteerde actiegroep Niet Te Koop tegen de verkoop van een sociale huurwoning in de Blauvoetstraat.
Sinds 2016 strijdt actiegroep Niet Te Koop tegen de doorgaande verkoop van sociale woningen in Amsterdam. Elke week organiseert de actiegroep een flitsactie bij een sociale huurwoning die door een woningcorporatie te koop wordt gezet. Meer info over Niet Te Koop

Vrijplaats voor de toekomst
Een huis hoort geen snelle handel te zijn, maar een blijvende plek om te wonen en te leven.
Met de collectieve, revolutionaire eigendomsvorm van VrijCoop halen we het Bajesdorp gebouw voorgoed van de vastgoedmarkt af. Zo garanderen we op de lange termijn de betaalbaarheid van de woonruimtes en ateliers.

Symposium 2023 on Free Cultural Spaces took place in Paradiso and in Ruigoord. The symposium was organised by the team Free Cultural Spaces Amsterdam (FCS Amsterdam), which is part of the network of ± 275 Free Cultural Spaces across Europe and a growing number of venues and festivals around the world.

De Culturele Stelling van Amsterdam presenteerde zaterdag 10 juni jongstleden het tweede Kunst Corso.
Het Corso is een optocht met performers, beeldend kunstenaars, theatermakers, dans en muziek. Een lange slinger van aanhangwagens met daarop installaties, muziek en performances, voortgetrokken door tractoren. Met het Kunst Corso vieren we de kunst- en cultuursector van Amsterdam en vragen we aandacht voor een leefbare en betaalbare stad voor iedereen!

Plannen zijn leuk, maar er is sinds de landelijke golf aan demonstraties in 2021 en 2022 niets veranderd aan de woonsituatie van miljoenen Nederlanders. Het aantal dak- en thuisloze mensen is niet afgenomen, de beschikbaarheid van sociale huurwoningen is niet toegenomen en miljoenen huurders leven nog iedere dag met de gevolgen van veel te dure, tijdelijke contracten in de vrije sector.

From 24 till 27 November 2022 Amsterdam Alternative organized the Vrije Ruimte Festival in cooperation with the Envisioning Free Space Conference from Berlin. Four inspiring days with discussions, presentations, music, docu screenings, food, tours, performance, exhibition and more at various ‘alternative’ locations through town.

On Saturday ADEV (Amsterdam Danst Ergens Voor) celebrated its 10th anniversary with another great street parade. The weather was beautiful, the athmosphere friendly, the music fantastic, the afterparties busy. Besides the violent actions of the police everything was close to perfect.

On Monday 23th of May 2022 a group of people showed up at the University of Amsterdam (13:00-14:30), Roeterseiland campus, to protest the presence of Shell at the UvA. Most of them are students and staff, but other groups like Autonomous Student Struggle, Scientist Rebellion, Extinction Rebellion and Anti-war Feminists joined as well.
There was an artistic performance to denounce how the UvA legitimizes the crimes of Shell and still collaborates with them by having guest lecturers from Shell, inviting Shell to career events and interviews, promoting excursions to Shell for students, and receiving (greenwashing) funding from Shell.

Protest in Amsterdam (op zondag 12 september 2021) tégen de uitverkoop van het woonrecht, tégen de hebzuchtige rijken die slapend rijker worden, tégen het leed van honderdduizenden Nederlanders en tégen het verdrijven van oorspronkelijke bewoners uit hun eigen wijken middels racistisch woonbeleid. Een oproep tot solidariteit met alle huurders en kopers die collectief slachtoffer zijn van deze crisis.

Zaterdag 12 juni 2021 - Met de Rebellion of One vragen de rebellen aandacht voor het persoonlijke verhaal in de klimaat- en ecologische crises. Zij dragen een sandwichbord met op de voorkant hun persoonlijke zorg/angst en op de achterkant de angst van een persoon die leeft in het mondiale Zuiden, waar deze crises ongekend hard toeslaan.
