(ES) - Can Batlló
Can Batlló represents a community effort to create an alternative model to capitalism, offering a non-discriminatory collective space based on mutual aid and horizontal organization.
The building that hosts Can Batlló is a former 19th-century textile mill that was reclaimed by the local community in 2011 thanks to the social movement “Can Batlló és pel barri” (Can Batlló belongs to the neighbourhood). Through this movement, the community was granted permanent rights to one of the buildings, which was transformed into what is now known as Bloc Onze. Through collective work, Bloc Onze was converted into several meeting spaces for the community, including a library, a climbing wall, an auditorium and much more. Since then, more buildings have been entrusted to the community and through collective effort, the former factory has become a bustling cultural center. Today, the association has seven committees that work on more than 40 initiatives. The projects include an urban vegetable garden, a cinema, a print shop and workshops on music production, carpentry and more.
