Can Vies was transformed into a social center when a group of young people squatted the building in 1997.
In 2014, the self-managed center faced an eviction attempt by the public transport operator Transports Metropolitans de Bacelona which resulted in the partial demolition of the building. Following riots and protests, the demolition was halted and the building was renovated thanks to a crowdfunding campaign launched by the community that covered the costs. Today, the center continues to be self-managed and offers sports classes, film screenings, talks, game nights and other cultural events for the local community.
