(IT) - Bread & Roses
Bread and Roses is a self-managed mutual aid space in Bari, South of Italy, established in March 2016 by various collectives. It occupies the former Villa Capriati, a property abandoned for over 30 years, transforming it into a vibrant community hub. The initiative emerged from the "Rifacciamola" campaign, aiming to counter urban precariousness and the lack of public spaces in the city. The space fosters solidarity and collaboration among diverse groups, including students, LGBTQ+ activists, feminists, and small-scale farmers. Bread and Roses operates on principles of mutual aid, rejecting charity in favor of reciprocal support. It features a "FuoriMercato" emporium selling local, organic products, a vegan bistro, and a cultural program offering concerts, workshops, and film screenings.
