Leoncavallo SPA (Self-Managed Public Space) is an occupied social center in Milan, founded in 1975. Rooted in the extra-parliamentary movements of Italy’s long ’68, it has hosted generations of activists carrying out political and cultural work in complete self-management. From the start, its occupation promoted social services like childcare, popular canteens, health counseling, and cultural initiatives, making it a true landmark of grassroots activism in the city. The history of this center and the resilience of its members are truly remarkable: just three years after the founding of the center, two of its most renowned young militants – Fausto Tinelli and Lorenzo “Iaio” Iannucci were murdered by a fascist group. Nonetheless, the center has never ceased to be active, becoming more and more heterogeneous: both young and old community members participate in the center’s activities, strongly united by opposition to capitalistic and fascist logics. Last month, on August 21st 2025, the Centro Sociale Leoncavallo was evicted by the government, after fifty years of resistance.
