(FR) - La Friche la Belle de Mai
La Friche la Belle de Mai is a major cultural hub in Marseille, located in a former tobacco factory and operating as a creative and innovative third space since 1992. Spanning 45,000 m², it combines artistic creation, urban experimentation, ecological initiatives, and social engagement.
The Friche hosts 70 resident structures, including 350 artists and cultural professionals, and offers a wide range of facilities: performance halls, exhibition spaces, shared workshops, gardens, sports and play areas, a restaurant, a bookstore, a daycare, and a rooftop terrace. Its programming includes over 600 public events per year, from youth workshops to major festivals, promoting access to culture for all and encouraging the crossover of artistic practices and audiences.
Organized as a cooperative, La Friche emphasizes collective governance, associating residents, employees, and public institutions to ensure democratic decision-making and social impact. By fostering experimentation, ecological awareness, and flexible urban design, it acts as both a production hub for artists and a dynamic public space, rooted in its neighborhood while engaging with broader societal and cultural networks.
