(FR) - La Générale

39 rue Gassendi, Paris 14ème, France

La Générale is a former squat turned independent cultural‑creation lab in Paris, founded in 2005. Originally born in Belleville, and after a first phase in the 11ᵉ arrondissement, the collective moved in 2020 to new premises in the 14ᵉ arrondissement, at 39 rue Gassendi.

More than just a venue, La Générale defines itself as a space for artistic, political and social experimentation - a place for residencies, creation, performance, debate and community.

Inside, you’ll find studios and rehearsal rooms, a shared garden, a bar and communal spaces, allowing artists and collectives from all backgrounds to develop theatre, music, visual arts, dance, radio, video, writing, graphic design, activism, and more. Residencies are mostly free or under a pay‑what‑you‑can model.

Managed collectively by around fifteen active volunteer members and two permanent staff, La Générale operates on consensus, prioritizing openness, solidarity, and collective governance rather than profit.

Through its programming (residencies, performances, workshops, debates, community events) La Générale aims to defend creation as a common good and challenge the commodification and privatization of cultural spaces.
