Ventilator workshops
From September we (Amsterdam Alterntive) will start providing various workshops and classes in the Ventilator cinema & bar of the OT301. We are doing this in cooperation with some very skilled and talented professionals, so serious business! We will start with classes from Matthew Curlewis and Leila Grey but more to be added in the near future

Basics of Screenwriting
8 x Wednesdays | 09:30 – 12:00 | Oct. 4 – Nov. 22
Explore the building blocks of writing for the screen
Whether creating stories for film, TV or digital devices, you’ll always be mixing and matching three different elements: sounds, words and visuals. Through a combination of close readings of screenplay scenes, watching excerpts of screen stories, and writing scenes during the sessions (and sometimes as homework), this eight week workshop will give you a thorough introduction to screenwriting.
Write to Reconnect
4 x Thursdays | 09:30 – 12:00 | Oct. 5 – 26
Reconnect with nature, yourself and others, to find new writing inspiration
In this workshop we’ll explore not only how writing can help us reconnect with ourselves and with others, but also how this process of reconnection can improve our writing. In particular, we’ll write in the sessions while looking to the natural world for inspiration – to its profound levels of complexity and interconnection, and how ‘connecting different dots’ can lead us to (pleasantly!) surprising results.
Revision Supervision
4 x Thursdays | 09:30 – 12:00 | Nov. 2 – 23
Learn rewriting techniques to get to the heart of what matters in your story
Are you unsure how to put the old adage: ‘Writing is rewriting’ into practice? Then don’t worry, you’re not alone. Within the safe, supportive atmosphere of this workshop, you’ll learn reading and rewriting techniques that will enable you to get to the heart of what matters in your story. In each session we’ll begin by writing and reading together, and then we’ll give feedback on two participant-manuscripts in two rounds. 1. What’s working? What’s strong in this writing? 2. Are there any confusions, or obstacles to understanding?
(Workshop limited to eight participants. Requirement: submission of a (max. 10 pages) manuscript, by Oct. 23rd.)

About
Sanford Meisner’s definition of acting was “living truthfully under imaginary circumstances”. Meisner believed that to achieve the ability to engage in truthful behaviour while immersed in an imagined reality the actor must learn to really listen, really observe and really do. Acting classes and directors often put so much emphasis on text work that actors can become disembodied, talking heads who are unable to really listen and respond to either their fellow actors, their own instincts or even the text.
“Act before you think – your instincts are more honest than your thoughts.”
Meisner said that “the foundation of acting is the reality of doing.” Meisner exercises are designed to get you out of your head and into your body. You will learn to unlearn the socialisation that teaches us to ignore our first impulses and to trust them instead. In other words, you will learn how to be free, spontaneous and playful – and to connect. Through the exercises of the technique, you’ll practice truly listening, observing and responding to both your fellow actors and your inner selves.
