Radical Riders are organising the Riders
Many of us are experiencing precarity in multiple aspects of our lives. From unaffordable housing to the government making it increasingly difficult for migrants to settle in the Netherlands, our lives often seem to be unsettled or made difficult.
Perhaps a symptom of this general precarity, produced by global capitalism and the neoliberal state, our jobs have become increasingly precarious also. They expect us to be unaware of our rights and specifically target foreign workers with their exploitative models (made quite apparent by the fact that often the nonsensical labour contracts are written directly in English).
We are made to believe that these jobs are not serious in any shape or form, but with the ongoing pandemic, it has become increasingly apparent that the work we do is often essential. These companies have seen astonishing growth within the past two years, with the workers who’s backs this is built upon seeing none of the benefits of this, as our hours are increasingly cut, wages lowered, and rights diminished. We found ourselves thinking that something, someone, needs to show these guys who really has the power.
We found ourselves thinking that something, someone, needs to show these guys who really has the power.
Thus, we founded Radical Riders. The independent union for fietskoeriers in the Netherlands. Within the five or so months we have existed, we have grown rapidly, gaining members from numerous flitzbezorg and food delivery companies. Our core group of organisers is based in Amsterdam, but we are rapidly spreading throughout the Netherlands. Not only this, but we have also gained some victories within this short time, and have some things in the works (check our website for what we’ve been up to).
We focus on radical action, collective support and empowering individuals.
We focus on radical action, collective support and empowering individuals. Together we make sense of and dismantle our labour contracts, contracts and payslips, and if there is something wrong, we fight together to change this. Whatever problem you are experiencing, we are there to support you.
Furthermore, we believe that unions should be an open space, where nobody is alone. Any rider can join, with no requirements, and we are completely free. As unionists, we oppose all oppression and support emancipation, and only spend money on actions and material.
To all riders out there, you are not alone in your struggle. Join us in the fight for fair work and conditions.
