“Giulio Regeni: All the Evil in the World” is the first documentary to reconstruct the judicial truth surrounding the abduction, torture, and murder of the Italian researcher, whose body was found near Cairo on 3 February 2016.

For the first time, Giulio’s story is told by his parents, Claudio Regeni and Paola Deffendi, who have fought tirelessly to uncover the truth about what happened to their son. The documentary also features the testimony from Alessandra Ballerini, the lawyer who has assisted them throughout their long legal battle, which eventually led to the trial in Italy of four members of Egypt’s National Security Agency.

Giulio Regeni was a 28-year-old Italian PhD researcher at the University of Cambridge conducting fieldwork in Cairo on independent trade unions. He disappeared on 25 January 2016, and his body was found on 3 February, bearing extensive signs of torture. Italian investigations established that Regeni had come to the attention of the Egyptian security apparatus before his disappearance and eventually led to the prosecution of four members of Egypt’s National Security Agency for their alleged involvement in his abduction, torture, and killing.

The Egyptian authorities have denied state responsibility, while their lack of effective cooperation has repeatedly hindered efforts to establish the full truth. At the same time, successive Italian governments have been criticised by Regeni’s family and human rights organisations for maintaining and strengthening diplomatic, economic, and military relations with Egypt despite the lack of substantial progress in the case. Italy recalled its ambassador from Cairo in 2016, but restored full diplomatic representation the following year.

Ten years after Giulio’s death, his story therefore remains not only a demand for truth and justice for him and his family but also a wider question of human rights, state accountability, and the fight against impunity. Keeping attention focused on his case means insisting that political, diplomatic, and economic interests should never take precedence over the search for truth and justice.
