Set in a working-class suburb of Paris, Ménilmontant follows two sisters who, after the murder of their parents, leave the countryside to build a life in the city. Love, betrayal, poverty, and violence gradually test their bondTold without intertitles, the film relies solely on faces, gesture, rapid montage and fractured images of the city. Kirsanoff’s editing, close-ups, and double exposures make Ménilmontant an intense and subjective experience of grief, desire, and urban life.

For this screening, Amsterdam-based live electronic act Kadavergraver performs a newly created score in real time. Working with degraded samples, broken rhythms, low frequencies, and dark electronic textures, Kadavergraver places the film in a contemporary sonic space responding to its unstable movement between intimate tragedy and the city outside.
