FIELD RECORDING WORKSHOP

Using hydrophones and field recorders, we’ll explore how technology can extend our hearing. We’ll listen to the acoustic world of the Sloterplas,from fish and other life beneath the surface to the hum of the city travelling through the water or wind moving through the reeds.

Created during the development of Amsterdam Nieuw-West, the Sloterplas was dug to provide sand for the construction of the surrounding neighbourhoods. Since then, the lake and the Sloterpark have become home to plants, animals and many other forms of life, as well as a place where people walk, sail, swim, dive, meet and rest. At the same time, its engineered origins continue to affect its ecology, contributing to ongoing challenges with its water quality.

Sensing Sloterplas invites participants to spend time with the lake in an attentive way. Through listening workshops, movement sessions and guided soundwalks, we practise becoming more aware of the water and our surroundings, noticing how this might change our ways of relating.

Sound travels through water, air and our tactile surroundings; through listening, we can notice how it resonates around and within our bodies. Through movement, we attend to our bodies’ intuitive responses to the landscape. By listening, moving and sensing together, we explore the Sloterplas as a living environment we are part of.
