Ed van der Elsken is best known as a photographer (exhibition at Rijksmuseum through Sept 13), but he was also an influential documentary filmmaker. With his personal style, in which the story unfolds between his subject, the viewer, and himself, he captures the Dutch zeitgeist of the 1960s–80s like no other.

Sweethearts, The infatuated camera, and A photographer films Amsterdam are full of images that have become iconic, while also containing surprising twists that are essential for fully understanding the work of Van der Elsken and, by extension, the society of that time.

Following the screening of these three films, there will be a Q&A session with journalist and author Joyce Roodnat (NRC etc.)
