filmHuis: Éviction
Line up: with dNM QueerTrans Movie Night
Open: 18:30 - 22:30
Tickets: € 0
This event is a special pride collaboration between filmHuis and the Nieuwe Meent’s ‘QueerTrans Movie Night’. We will be showing the Canadian documentary Éviction (Montreal, 2023). It will be screening for the first time in the Netherlands. We will start with a communal dinner between 18:30-19:30. First come first served.
There are communities that resemble families without actually being families, allowing otherwise isolated individuals to rediscover an identity and a sense of belonging. The queer community portrayed in Éviction, was clearly one of these. Filmmaker Mathilde Capone followed five roommates forced to leave their apartment on Parthenais Street in Montreal, a building that had just been sold. The residents search for a new place to call home in the midst of a housing crisis and land speculation.
The place famous for its festive gatherings and daily communal dinners, holds major importance for the queer community. Many found themselves able to finally be themselves there, whereas their identity was a problem everywhere else.
The film illustrates how a community, relationships, and a living environment can have a concrete impact, particularly in the lives of marginalized communities. This is despite a real estate market solely focused on profit. Despite some slow moments, Eviction has the merit of presenting housing problems from a rarely seen perspective.
French spoken, English subtitles.
