F*CKING FAIRIES

One thing you’re sure of: you’re different than the others. You think differently and you are treated differently. You try to go along but deep inside you know that won’t change anything. You are a sort of an Ugly Duckling. What is there to do about it? Are you going to change? Or are you going to escape this suffocating environment? 

For centuries queer and neurodivergent people have been using fantasy to escape the reality that society does not hold space for them. We write stories and create worlds in which we can conquer our struggles. Danish fairytale writer Hans Christian Andersen did this as well. As a queer person on the autism spectrum, he created stories that deal with obsession, masking, queer longing and his struggles with neurodiversity. The queer community has embraced these stories, like the Little Mermaid, and for our performance we have let ourselves be inspired by them once more. 

F*CKING FAIRIES will be a multidisciplinary performance where dance, music and text come together. Different stories from Hans Christian Andersen are bundled with personal experiences from the makers. Expect camp, recognition, and fairytales like you have never seen them before.

F*CKING FAIRIES

Eén ding ben je zeker van, je bent anders dan anderen. Je denkt anders dan anderen en je wordt anders behandeld. Je kunt wel proberen om mee te doen maar vanbinnen weet je dat het altijd zo zal blijven. Je bent een soort Ugly Duckling. Wat kun je dan doen? Ga je proberen te veranderen? Of probeer je juist te ontsnappen aan deze verstikkende omgeving? 

Fantasie is al eeuwenlang het redmiddel voor queer- en neurodiverse personen om te ontsnappen aan de realiteit dat de samenleving geen ruimte voor hen maakt. We schrijven verhalen en creëren werelden waarin we onze worstelingen aankunnen. Deense sprookjesschrijver Hans Christian Andersen deed dit ook. Als queer persoon op het spectrum creëerde hij verhalen die omgaan met obsessie, masking, queer verlangen en zijn worstelingen met neurodiversiteit. De queer community heeft deze verhalen zoals de Kleine Zeemeermin omarmt en nu laten Hawa Yakubu, Hugo de Graaf en Lou Mertens zich er ook door inspireren voor F*CKING FAIRIES. Het wordt een multidisciplinaire voorstelling met dans en teksttheater. Verwacht een uitbundige ervaring die zowel overprikkeld als ontprikkeld. Waarin verschillende verhalen van Hans Christian Andersen gebundeld worden met de persoonlijke ervaringen van de makers. 

Over de makers 

Hawa Yakubu, Hugo de Graaf en Lou Mertens zijn alle drie jonge makers. Ze leerden elkaar kennen tijdens het maakproces van de voorstelling ‘Gewoon Door’ bij Jeugdtheater de Krakeling. Als makers voerden zij veel gesprekken over hun gedeelde ervaringen met neurodiversiteit en hun queer (gender)identiteit waar zij zich nu door laten inspireren.

July 2026: WorldPride Month at Plein Theater

Plein Theater celebrates queerness with a bold and motley programme full of theatre, film, drag, and performance !

Throughout the year, but especially during the month of July, Plein Theater gives unfiltered visibility to film and emerging artists engaging with queer themes. This year in the spirit of the extraordinary WorldPride Amsterdam, which theme UNITY stands for solidarity, connection, and a shared fight for equality.

An important part of the programme originates from an open call as part of our co-creation programme, where shared ownership and participation are key. Ten emerging and talented artists present work that engages with queer perspectives, identity, the body, freedom, and the many ways in which we can celebrate ourselves and each other.

We believe that a theater is not only a stage, but also a meeting center where artists, local residents, communities, and audiences collectively shape what is presented. Our co-creation programme can be recognised by the #GetInvolved label.

From 15th to 19th of July we screen ten queer films by the feminist film collective Cinemien! For decades, Cinemien has been a pioneer in showcasing powerful women’s stories, LGBTQIA+ perspectives, and groundbreaking documentaries.

We also Bring Drag Back to the Theatre with a special WorldPride edition featuring the irresistible drag queen Sederginne. And last but not least, together with queer.red and Lesbique, we explore the boundaries of queer erotique during Darkroom on Stage!
