You may now kiss my ass
Did you ever attend a wedding at Plein Theater?
Now, you are cordially invited to the wedding of Veronica Whelm Daylight. An alter ego born from hidden desires, suppressed dreams, and a thrashy wig.
''You may now kiss my ass'' transforms any place into a wedding site - from the GVB ferry or Albert Heijn aisles to canal water accessed by swimming pool mattresses.
In this work, the fearlessly awkward yet charming Veronica marries herself and invites audiences to become her wedding guests. With her as their host, they join an awkwardly humorous spectacle full of surprises, intrusive thoughts, cake and collective situations. At its core, the wedding-work brings everyone together in celebrating oddness, awkwardness, and everything that doesn’t quite fit.
After being performed five Wednesdays in a row in public space across Amsterdam, it now arrives indoors, adapted to the intimate space of Plein Theater.
The five-week ‘’You may now kiss my ass’’ series was supported by Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst, NORMA Fonds and Fair Performance Pact.
Alberte Buch Gøbel
Alberte Buch Gøbel is a performance maker and dance artist based in Amsterdam. She creates performances that invite personal and collective liberation through awkward-situation-making and playful interaction. Researching awkwardness as a tool to embrace, provoke, play and liberate, she aims to create spaces where one can break free from the norms society has handed us about how to exist in this world. Through humor and play, her work reinforces that we can exist together as we are and as who we can become.
If you ask her why she dresses up in wigs and face paint, she might reference a fragment of her longer artist manifesto:
‘’....
who determines what my cover is?
cover of vogue
iphone cover
cover letter
cover me
cover myself in wigs
…’’
Alberte is Veronica and Veronica is Alberte.
July 2026: WorldPride Month at Plein Theater
Plein Theater celebrates queerness with a bold and motley programme full of theatre, film, drag, and performance !
Throughout the year, but especially during the month of July, Plein Theater gives unfiltered visibility to film and emerging artists engaging with queer themes. This year in the spirit of the extraordinary WorldPride Amsterdam, which theme UNITY stands for solidarity, connection, and a shared fight for equality.
An important part of the programme originates from an open call as part of our co-creation programme, where shared ownership and participation are key. Ten emerging and talented artists present work that engages with queer perspectives, identity, the body, freedom, and the many ways in which we can celebrate ourselves and each other.
We believe that a theater is not only a stage, but also a meeting center where artists, local residents, communities, and audiences collectively shape what is presented. Our co-creation programme can be recognised by the #GetInvolved label.
From 15th to 19th of July we screen ten queer films by the feminist film collective Cinemien! For decades, Cinemien has been a pioneer in showcasing powerful women’s stories, LGBTQIA+ perspectives, and groundbreaking documentaries.
We also Bring Drag Back to the Theatre with a special WorldPride edition featuring the irresistible drag queen Sederginne. And last but not least, together with queer.red and Lesbique, we explore the boundaries of queer erotique during Darkroom on Stage!
