كرسي المختار (The Mukhtar’s Chair) + Q&A
Wael Kadlo | 2024 | Netherlands | 40’ | Arabic, EN subtitles
A visual anthropological study filmed in Leiden, exploring the nuanced experiences of Syrian refugees navigating integration in the Netherlands. The film follows Saleh, a man who has earned the title "Al-Mukhtar" (the Chosen One) from his social circle for his unwavering willingness to help others. Acting as an informal advisor and support system for newcomers, Saleh's daily life becomes a lens through which the film examines the complexities of adapting to a new culture. It is a story of resilience, community, and the informal roles that emerge within diaspora populations, highlighting both the profound struggles and the quiet victories of rebuilding one's life.
Followed by a Q&A with the director.
