Trashed my title - Avantika Tibrewala
Ever found yourself pumping to Abba and being left smiling and energized? Do you know that feeling when you have had a tough day and all you want to do is hide in your blanket with junk food and ‘trashy’ movies? Do you find yourself gearing up for Eurovision, but calling it a guilty pleasure? How often and when do you consume products of popular culture and own it irrespective of the judgment for your choice? there is duality in perceptions around trash culture and shame in admitting the consumption of it, let alone pleasure received from it.
But now, get ready for all the glitter and glamour, because trash culture will make you proud to have a ‘bad taste’. Shake your butts with revelry and stick a finger to them elites who divide the art in categories of high and low. Not a guilty pleasure this time, find your souls twerking as you acknowledge the escape from seriousness of life. Be trashy. Be dirty. Be sexy. BE YOU. Raawwwr ;)
Trailer made for a the tryout done during the Café Theatre Festival in Utrecht which was a small part (and custimised for café setting) of the entire show that was created for Fringe Festival '22 In Amsterdam.
Avantika stands by the saying “Art is one that dares, not pleases”
An Indian-born contemporary performer and creator, Avantika understands the need to use art as a tool to bridge cultural gaps and to cross borders. Therefore, her works speak of social taboos and are often provocative and thought-provoking. Her experiential style of performance breaks down the borders between public and performer and between performance and reality. Born and raised as an independent thinker in a traditional, sometimes orthodox, and culturally diverse India, her vision as a performer and creator is defined by a desire to question societal conditioning, a desire to inspire conversation within the public and a belief that the future of contemporary art is experiential and interactive. Being a person who thrives on doing what they are told not to, one can witness this non-conformity in her art and practice.
On a lighter note though, Avantika loves to spoon sweet chilli sauce and carry her ukulele around everywhere in hopes to learn it one day. She is extremely interested in learning horse riding, but her lazy ass does not allow her to. She believes that what could save her from going to hell is her tongue that can roll like a snake and openly challenges that on one else can do it.
