Piep Knars Krijs Kraak
Bijna precies één jaar geleden, in november 2021, organiseerde Mokum Kraakt de expositie Huisvrede in Hotel Mokum, met meer dan 90 deelnemers en verspreid over alle vijf verdiepingen van het gebouw. Een paar nachten lang werd dit dode gebouw dat al jaren leeg stond leven ingeblazen. Die herfst voelde het echt alsof er iets zou kunnen veranderen. Maar iets meer dan twee weken daarna oefende de gemeente Amsterdam haar macht uit en verbandde ze Hotel Mokum tot leegstand - wat eens te meer bewijst dat het recht op eigendom voor hen zwaarder weegt dan het recht om te wonen, om te leven.
Één jaar en één energie- en inflatiecrisis later staat Hotel Mokum nog steeds leeg terwijl de stad op het punt staat in te storten onder haar eigen gewicht, en daarbij allerlei geluiden maakt. Mensen die al moeite hadden om eten en een slaapplek te betalen, kunnen zich geen verwarming meer veroorloven - de komende winter zal inderdaad streng worden. En al die tijd, terwijl deze arme zielen koud en hongerig zijn, laten speculanten en patriarchen van ruïnes zoals Peter Hagedoorn leegstaande gebouwen achter door de hele stad heen, om weg te rotten. Dit moet nu stoppen; eis nu rechtvaardige huisvesting!
Daarom heeft Mokum Kraakt op 20.10.2022 de Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 302 gekraakt en omgedoopt tot Het Monument in een poging dit verlaten huis nieuw leven in te blazen. Om te vieren dat deze herrezen ruïne na jaren van verwaarlozing weer deel uitmaakt van het rijk der levenden, nodigt Mokum Kraakt je uit voor de tentoonstelling Piep Knars Krijs Kraak.
Van vrijdag 28.10. tot zondag 30.10. bij Het Monument (Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 302) organiseert Mokum Kraakt Piep Knars Krijs Kraak, een tentoonstelling met dertien bijdragen van verschillende kunstenaars en activisten die zoeken naar manieren waarop (goedkope!) kunst en cultuur kan blijven bestaan in een stad die op instorten lijkt te staan. De deelnemers werden uit ruim 120 inzendingen gekozen na een open call die het collectief in augustus van dit jaar uitschreef. De tentoonstelling wordt gefinancierd door Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie.
Piep Knars Krijs Kraak vraagt naar de weerklank van korte termijn huurcontracten;
over hoe de staat, door vooringenomenheid van de politie, met krakers praat;
over de vele gezichten van de eindeloze zoektocht naar thuis;
over wat stadsgeesten willen, wie ze achtervolgen en wie ze beschermen;
over de noodzaak van tegencultuur in steden die worden geteisterd door wooncrises;
over arbeiders die zich verzetten tegen de uitbuitende aard van durfkapitalisme en de medeplichtigheid van de staat;
over woningcorporaties die zich de taal van self care toe-eigenen;
over verborgen verhalen over onderdak en lichamelijke interieurs, en bewoners die spelen met de structuren van hun toegewezen ruimtes;
over de paradox van grenzen, open voor sommigen en gesloten voor anderen, die vluchtelingen gegijzeld houden, in limbo;
en over hoe kraken in beeld komt als een oplossing voor veel van deze problemen.

Almost exactly one year ago, in November 2021, Mokum Kraakt organised the House Peace exhibition at Hotel Mokum with more than 90 contributors and spanning all 5 floors of the building. For a few nights, this dead building which had been empty for years was lit with life again. That fall, it really felt like something might change. But a little over 2 weeks later, the municipality of Amsterdam excercised its power and exorcised Hotel Mokum for vacancy—proving once again that for them, the right to own property outweighs the right to live.
One year, one energy- and one inflation crisis later, Hotel Mokum remains empty while the city seems about to collapse under its own weight, making all kinds of sounds in the process. People who were already struggling to afford to sleep and eat can no longer afford to heat—coming winter will be a harsh one, indeed. And all this time, while these poor souls are cold and hungry, the speculators and patriarchs of ruins like Peter Hagedoorn leave empty buildings to decay all over the city. This must stop; demand housing justice now!
This is why Mokum Kraakt has squatted the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 302 on 20.10.2022 and renamed it The Monument in an attempt to breathe new life into this abandoned house. In celebration of this resurrected ruin joining the realm of the living once again after years of neglect, Mokum Kraakt invites you to the exhibition Piep Knars Krijs Kraak.
From Friday, 28.10.—Sunday, 30.10. at The Monument (Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 302), Mokum Kraakt is organizing Piep Knars Krijs Kraak, an exhibition with 13 contributions by different artists and activists that are looking for ways in which (cheap!) art and culture can continue to exist in a city that's cracking at the seems. The participants were chosen from over 120 applications to an open call the collective published in August of this year. The exhibition is funded by Creative Industries Fund NL.
Piep Knars Krijs Kraak asks about the reverberations of short term rental contracts;
about how the state, through bias of police, talks to squatters;
about the many faces of the endless search for home;
about what urban spirits want, who they haunt and who they protect;
about the necessity for counterculture in cities plagued by housing crises;
about workers resisting the exploitative nature of venture capitalism and the complicity of the state;
about housing corporations' appropriating languages of self-care;
about concealed narratives of shelter and bodily interiors, and habitants playing with the structures of their ascribed spaces;
about the paradox of borders, open for some and closed for others, holding refugees dependent, in limbo;
and about how squatting enters as a solution to many of these problems.
