The seventeenth edition of the 2.Dh5 Festival will take place in Amsterdam from 24 to 26 February.
Wat is het 2.Dh5 Festival?
2.Dh5 is een jaarlijks festival voor de uitwisseling van radicale ideeën, strategieën en praktijken door grassroots groepen, collectieve projecten en directe actiecampagnes in Nederland en daarbuiten. Het festival is voor en door sociale bewegingen. Het is dan ook een platform voor allerlei groepen en gaat uit van horizontale zelf-organisatie.
2.Dh5 vindt dit jaar weer plaats in Ru Paré in Amsterdam-West. Kun je iets vertellen over deze plek?
Ru Paré is een voormalige basisschool in Amsterdam Slotervaart die tegenwoordig een buurtcentrum is. Tientallen initiatieven en organisaties vinden er hun thuis, van migrantenvrouwenorganisaties, de Koerdische gemeenschap, een taalschool tot het ASKV dat ongedocumenteerde vluchtelingen ondersteunt. Verder is het ook het Huis van de Wijk en heeft het een eigen culturele programmering.
Het thema van het festival dit jaar is “Now is the Time of Monsters”. Waarom?
2.Dh5 Festival heeft normaal gesproken elk jaar een nieuw thema dat dient ter inspiratie voor het bedenken van workshops. Maar de afgelopen jaren kwamen we steeds een beetje bij hetzelfde uit, bij een algeheel gevoel van urgentie door steeds maar verder escalerende met elkaar verbonden crises wereldwijd. Twee jaar geleden hadden we al het thema ‘Uit de pan, in het vuur’, een gezegde dat refereert naar hoe alles steeds maar van kwaad tot erger lijkt te gaan. Het thema dit jaar is eigenlijk geleend van een citaat van Antonio Gramsci, een Italiaanse communist en filosoof van voor de tweede wereldoorlog: “The old world is dying, and the new world struggles to be born; now is the time of monsters”. Toepasselijk voor de jaren ‘30 van de vorige eeuw maar dus ook voor deze tijd.
Wat voor workshops en lezingen kunnen we verwachten?

What is the 2.Dh5 Festival?
2.Dh5 is an annual festival for the exchange of radical ideas, strategies and practices by grassroots groups, collective projects and direct action campaigns in the Netherlands and beyond. The festival is for and by social movements. It is therefore a platform for all kinds of groups and is based on horizontal self-organization.
2.Dh5 will take place again this year in Ru Paré in Amsterdam-West. Can you tell us something about this place?
Ru Paré is a former primary school in Amsterdam Slotervaart that is now a community center. Dozens of initiatives and organizations are based there, including migrant women’s and Kurdish organizations, and a language school that supports undocumented refugees. It is also the Huis van de Wijk (House of the Neighborhood) and presents its own cultural programming as well.
The theme of this year’s festival is “Now is the Time of Monsters”. Why?
The 2.Dh5 Festival has a new theme every year that serves as inspiration for workshop, presentation and panel session proposals. Over the past few years, we’ve ended up with very similar themes that reflect the general sense of urgency stemming from interconnected & ever-escalating crises around the world. Two years ago the theme was ‘Out of the pan, into the fire’, a saying that refers to how everything seems to always go from bad to worse. This year’s theme is borrowed from a quote attributed to pre-war Italian communist and philosopher Antonio Gramsci: “The old world is dying, and the new world struggles to be born: now is the time of monsters”. Applicable to his context of 1930’s Italy, but also for our situations and struggles today.
What kind of workshops and lectures can we expect?
