Kunstverein is a domestic franchise (Amsterdam, New York, Toronto and Milan) and functioning curatorial office that offers presentations, lectures, screenings and independent publishing. By creating a critical pool and exploring public-private relationships, Kunstverein reflects upon the manner in which cultural practices are traditionally administered. Due to its unconventional make-up it allows alternative methods to be considered in terms of presentation, hosting and exhibition making. Significantly and ultimately, Kunstverein aims to contribute in a novel fashion to the cultural scene in Amsterdam, the Netherlands and abroad.

Inspired by the lesser known sides of European brewing culture and devoted to uncommon artisanal techniques, Butcher's Tears makes distinctive beers that progress beyond fashion and convention.
We use the old-school practice of cultivating our own yeast within the brewery, by harvesting a fresh crop from one batch of beer and adding it to the next in a continous cycle.

We are consequently not making "wild" beer but the process is likewise not fully controlled such as when using common laboratory grown yeast. Instead we put our trust in the natural behaviour and eccentricities of our culture, which through this method gives the beer a distinctive character of its own.

The fermentation is carried out in open vessels, which is a rare practice nowadays. This allows the yeast to work under more natural conditions and produce a greater depth of flavour - imparting a "bouquet" so to speak.

Saarein is a legendary feminist café. Saarein is cultural heritage. Saarein is a safe haven. A significant part of Dutch women’s and queer history is preserved in the stones of this building. That history begins in 1978 when a collective of women, with the help of crowdfunding, takes over the café from Saar and Rein. Saarein.

There was a strong need for a women-only café, “a self-managed meeting place for all kinds of women, where you can meet undisturbed to talk, drink, play pool, or flirt.” In 1978, when women still lacked the right to sit at a bar alone without a man’s accompaniment, this collective reached their breaking point. Protests followed, and eventually, their own place with their own rules!

This women’s collective is not just any collective; they are pioneers of the gay and women’s movement. The women were part of the Dolle Mina’s, Paarse September, and Lesbian Nation. They are the founders of our freedom. Under the leadership of these women, Saarein evolves into a beloved brown bar for beer, women’s entertainment, and queer parties, while also serving as a feminist stronghold where numerous initiatives are conceived to advance queer and women’s emancipation.

Saarein II (1999 – 2024)
In 1999, Dia Roozemond took over the café from the women’s collective, which included members like Marjan Sax (Mama Cash). Dia was born on Damstraat, raised in Amsterdam West, and had extensive experience in hospitality. From the moment of taking over, Dia rebranded Saarein as “Saarein 2”. The café remained a safe space and meeting place for lesbian/bi women, transgender people, gays, and queers. All queer-minded people are welcome with Dia.

The future of Saarein (2024 and beyond!)
And now, together, we are entering a new phase. After 25 years, Dia looks forward to her well-deserved retirement, and we are determined to preserve Saarein at all costs. Through this crowdfunding, we aim to raise funds to purchase it. Subsequently, Saarein will be incorporated into a foundation that belongs to all of us. This is our place, and we want to keep it that way!
We also have ambitions to open Saarein more often and for longer hours. We want to organize events more frequently in the evenings, but also during the day. And we want to play a larger role in our community by investing our proceeds in existing and new initiatives that improve the position of women and LGBTQIAP+ individuals.

Ons menu is overzichtelijk, waarbij we het belangrijk vinden om kwaliteit te bieden én om betaalbaar te zijn. De producten die wij aanbieden zijn net even anders en vaak lokaal. Lunch, borrel of diner, of je nou vegetariër bent of niet, voor iedereen is er wat.

Tolbar zit in de creatieve broedplaats ‘Cinetol – Ruimte voor Cultuur & Ondernemen’: een werkomgeving voor creatieven en een podium voor culturele programmering. Elke week is er wel iets te doen: concert, poëzie, filmavond en nog veel meer. Check het programma hier.

Welcome. Tolbar is a creative space and bar, founded June 5th 2015. It’s like a second living room, where you can easily sit down for some food or drinks, or work behind your laptop.

We care about offering quality as well as being affordable. The products we offer are slightly different than what you usually get and often local. Lunch, drinks or dinner, whether you’re vegetarian or not, there’s something for everyone.

Tolbar is located in the creative space ‘Cinetol – Space for Culture & Entrepreneurship’: a working environment for creatives and a venue for art and culture. There’s something going on every week: concerts, poetry, film nights and much more! Check the program here.

Walhalla is the independent craft brewery that brews the gods’ favorite ales. Bold and magical beers, thirst-quenching and pure.
Our cozy taproom is adjacent to the brewery with 13 of our beers on tap. Try our lager, IPA’s and stouts.

Vanaf 1 december 2016 is Amsterdam een nieuw live podium rijker. Voor velen is het geen onbekende locatie meer want Pllek staat zowel in Amsterdam als ver daarbuiten bekend als culturele locatie met (h)eerlijk eten, een stadsstrand en een mooi uitzicht op de skyline van Amsterdam. Na ruim vier jaar werd het tijd voor een nieuwe stap. Dat wordt de Pllek Live Stage, met elke eerste donderdag van de maand nieuwe, spannende live optredens. 

Pllek Live Stage wordt een toegankelijk podium voor de nieuwsgierige en open-minded muziekliefhebber. De zaal naast het restaurant is ingericht met een professioneel licht- en geluidssysteem en daarmee een volwaardig poppodium dat ruimte biedt aan ruim 300 bezoekers. Het stoere zusje van Pllek hoopt onverwachte, energieke en bovenal dansbare live performances in een bijzondere industriële setting te brengen. Verwacht internationale acts, debuut optredens en crossovers tussen hedendaagse elektronica met westerse en niet westerse muziekgenres.
Pllek Live Stage wil bezoekers uitdagen om buiten hun huidige comfortzones te treden en het onbekende te ervaren. Zoals altijd wil Pllek iets anders bieden dan het aanbod uit de stad. Pllek wil verwarren, spelen met verwachtingen en alle zintuigen prikkelen.

Pllek is vrij, verbonden, warm en creatief, met aandacht voor bewust leven en duurzaamheid. Bewust leven gaat verder dan een gezonde levensstijl en verantwoord eten. Pllek wil mensen inspireren. Gedurende het hele jaar programmeren we daarom op onze eigen wijze livemuziek, internationale films met een boodschap, yoga, kunstexposities en diverse (culturele) events. Bij Pllek ervaar je een eilandgevoel midden in de stad.

Fietsenwerkplaats Smerig in de Pijp wordt gerund door een collectief van acht vrijwilliger*s. Al ruim 35 jaar repareren we met veel plezier fietsen en bouwen we wrakken om tot goede stadsfietsen. We werken zoveel mogelijk met gebruikte onderdelen en we besteden graag  aandacht aan fietsen van mensen die dat waarderen. Iedere vrijdag hebben we een zelfwerkdag, waar je - als beginner of gevorderde - onder begeleiding zelf je fiets kunt repareren. We staan regelmatig open voor nieuwe collega’s. We verhuren een bakfiets en touw & blok.

Smerig is onderdeel van het woonwerkpand De Fabriek, een goede plek om zonder subsidie op een kleinschalige, duurzame, niet-commerciële manier fietsen te maken.

Smerig is a bicycle workshop run by eight volunteers and located in the Amsterdam neighbourhood De Pijp. For more than 35 years we enjoy repairing bicycles, transforming wrecks into good city bikes. We work as much as possible with second hand materials and we love to put energy into bikes of people who appreciate it. Every Friday on ‘self-working-day’ we invite you - beginner or experienced repairer - to fix your own bicycle with our help. You can also rent a carrier cycle and rope & block.

Smerig is part of living & working community De Fabriek, which enables us to repair bicycles our way - without subsidies, in a small-scale, sustainable, non-commercial way.

Kriterion werd in 1945 opgericht om studenten in staat te stellen zelf hun studie te financieren. 

Tot op de dag van vandaag vormt het concept van Kriterion een unicum in Nederland en zover ons bekend in de wereld: eennon–hiërarchisch bedrijf dat volledig door studenten wordt gerund.

Met deze insteek heeft Kriterion zich inmiddels ontwikkeld tot een cultureel instituut waar een divers publiek elkaar ontmoet om te genieten van het gezellige café en gevarieerde filmaanbod. De huidige filmprogrammering van Kriterion laat zich kenmerken als een mix van stevige edgy arthouse, kwaliteits-Oscar-en-Palme-d’Or-kandidaten, toegankelijkere maar spannende cross-over, uitzonderlijke documentaires. Kortom, kwaliteitsfilm met een ‘edge’ blijft ons kenmerken, waarbij Kriterion altijd tracht om maatschappelijk relevante en kunstzinnige film een podium te bieden. Naast films wordt ruim aandacht besteed aan bijzondere evenementen, zoals concerten, festivals, Q&A’s, kinderfeestjes, debatten en kunstexposities.

Een eigenzinnige boekhandel met liefde en oog voor bijzondere uitgaven. Literatuur, kinderboeken, filosofie, architectuur, geschiedenis, Tao, alles nodigt uit om een kopje koffie te bestellen en nog wat te blijven hangen - oh, daar achter in de zaak liggen mooie yoga spullen…

De filosofie van Boekhandel van Pampus is in drie woorden te vangen:

Uitnodigen tot oponthoud.

Want voor ons is onthaasten geen modieus marketingwoord, voor ons is het een uitdaging. De zaak is er vanaf het begin in 2009 op ingericht. Natuurlijk kunt u als klant bij ons gewoon een boek pakken, afrekenen en weggaan. Maar er zijn ook aangename leunstoelen om in te gaan zitten en nog wat in de winkel te blijven lezen, met of zonder kopje koffie. En voor de jongere lezers hebben we twee fijne hoekjes ingericht met zachte kussens waar ze kunnen lezen én wegkruipen.

Een vraag, er volgt ’n antwoord, nog ’n antwoord en daar komt een klant met nog een ander antwoord … Wat nu?

U bekijkt de aangeraden titels, ruikt eraan, neemt ze in uw hand en schat ze in. U leest wat in het ene of in het andere, slokje koffie, misschien denkt u er nog even over en komt u morgen terug.

De titels uit de top-10 hebben we staan, in de kasten, vaak rug-aan-rug. Maar onze pareltjes en favoriete boeken tonen we plat liggend. Die verdienen immers wat meer aandacht. Als we horen verzuchten ‘Wat een snoepwinkel’, dan zijn wij tevreden.

Joe’s is a squatted political social center that exists on a basis of mutual-aid and solidarity. Everyone involved in Joe’s is a volunteer. We have been active since June 2005 and are open 6 days a week. We run a vegan kitchen, a give away shop, info and movie nights. The members of our collective come from diverse backgrounds, we have different nationalities as well as genders/non-genders.

Because we are a squatted social center we are drawn to the struggle for housing and the right to the city, ideally achieved by direct action. We hope to provide a platform that supports social, environmental, spatial and economic justice. We also see bringing people together in a non-commercial space as a political act. This is why we try to be an inclusive and empowering space to all individuals, affinity groups and collectives interested in and involved in addressing these issues.

We believe unequal power relations are everywhere in this society, and since everyone is, (willingly or not) a part of society, these unequal relations will also exist within Joe’s. By making existing power relations more explicit, and addressing what is problematic about them, we try and find ways to make our collective structure more equal and inclusive. We know that there are no easy solutions for overcoming deeply ingrained patterns or social constructs within society or Joe’s. It requires endless hard work, trying to work together with people from different backgrounds, dealing with mishaps and failures, trying to resolve disagreements, and slowly, incrementally changing the world a little bit at a time. With the victories and all the fun, but also the despair and sometimes loneliness.

We try and reach consensus about our shared values and goals, and the ways to achieve these. We do that in more formal ways, through email lists and (sometimes) meetings, but also in more informal ways, in talks and discussions one-on-one or with several people.

We do not always agree, on methods nor on aims, but we always try to find mutual ground and work together to find solutions to the problems that arise, as allies, if not friends. If the problem doesn’t get solved this way, we try to implement a mediation trajectory, inviting people uninvolved in a conflict to help resolve it. We would like to encourage people that visit Joe’s to deal with problems inside Joe’s in a likewise manner. If however this does not work, it is always possible to ask the help of a volunteer. If you do not feel comfortable with this you can also mail the entire volunteer list and we can figure out a solution together.

Anyone who wants to help out or organize an event at Joe’s is more than welcome. We are always looking for people to run their own events and initiatives from Joe’s. We invite you to take responsibility with us. We ask you to help us keep the space open literally and figuratively. Joe’s stays open by working together and by finding ways to make that possible.

GWA Grafische Werkplaats Amsterdam is the printing lab for letterpress, bookbinding, silkscreen and (typo)graphic techniques. Whats new?
After 17 years steady basis in the East, the big money has decided for us we have to leave our place and makes us move all the seriously heavy gear to another part of Amsterdam. We are very happy to announe that our new spot will be no less than the fabulous NDSM wharf, where we will be part of NDSM Art City.

GWA Grafische Werkplaats Amsterdam drukt door.. aan de zonzij van het IJ.
GWA is een stichting die toeziet op het behoud van het grafisch erfgoed. Door het werkend houden van machines, maar vooral door zoveel mogelijk mensen in aanraking te brengen met de oude ambachten waar Nederland (Amsterdam!) zo'n grote traditie in kent. We bieden sinds 2004 cursussen en workshops op het gebied van letterzetten, drukken, zeefdruk, lino- en houtsnede en boekbinden. GWA werkt samen met basisonderwijs, middelbaar onderwijs en kunstacademies. Vanaf april 2021 is de werkplaats te vinden op de NDSM werf in Amsterdam Noord. Welkom!
