Cinema of the Dam'd is pleased to host a 16 week series of new movies by emerging female filmmakers. Women's Work is divided into four thematic program blocks of four features each. Our Documentary block looks at the best in non-fiction filmmaking. Tonight we invite you into Lola Arias’ art project Theatre of War (2018).
Though the 1982 Falklands War (guerra de las Malvinas) is not well remembered by younger generations, it left an indelible mark on the countries that fought it. In 2013 Lola Arias, an Argentinian actress, theater and film director, started a multimedia project about the long term effects of the war including a video installation, a theater play and a book.
In the final product of her research, six veterans from Argentina and Britain are brought together to process their memories of those 74 days. Although the war was short-lived, the men have vivid memories of combat. Arias gives them a stage on which to confront their lingering pain and confusion, resulting in beautiful and sometimes bizarre performances. Protected by the safe environment Arias creates, the veterans share their intimate memories of the battlefield and of the years that followed the conflict, by acting them out together. Directed by Lola Arias, 2018, Argentina, 81 minutes. In Spanish and English w/ English subtitles.
