We are honoured to co-organize initiation rite of El MÁGICO BAOBAB picó son sistema at MEZRAB.

Freshly built and hand painted in Barranquilla by the master William Gutierrez Peñaloza. The dazzling colours are back lit.. it glows in the dark. AfSpecially for his night the picó will travel to Amsterdam to give this night the full carribean experience. Picótero Don Alerio will initiate the system with his signature sound of exquisite soukous and champeta.

The picó systems are a unique phenomenon unique to Colombian cities on the Caribbean coast. From the 1950s African music became incredibly popular in cities like Cartagena and Barranquilla. A unique sound system culture developed, with custom built sound systems with flashing, fluorescent hand painted artwork. A home grown Colombian african genre eventually emerged: champeta, which is together with African soukous the style that can be heard on the picó parties
