De Amsterdam Alternative Academie is een plek om na te denken over de wereld waarin we leven. Verzet begint bij collectief bewustzijn en bewustzijn begint bij samen analyseren. Aan de hand van teksten en andere culturele objecten gaan we in gesprek over kapitalisme, klimaat, digitalisering, gender, racisme, seksualiteit en het dagelijks leven (want het persoonlijke is nog steeds politiek). We doen dit vanuit een intersectioneel perspecief op hoe kapitalisme, het patriarchaat, witte suprematie en andere dominante machtsstructuren elkaar versterken.

Ooit was “universiteit” een gemeenschap van gelijken. Wij willen terug naar dat ideaal en van elkaar leren zonder hiërarchieën (maar dan dus divers en intersectioneel, want die Middeleeuwse idealen hadden ook zo hun beperkingen). AA Academie is inclusief en laagdrempelig. We bespreken teksten op zo’n manier dat iedereen mee kan doen ongeacht voorkennis of opleiding. Ieder persoon heeft creatieve ideeën. Laten we ruimte maken voor die ideeën! De bijeenkomsten zijn tweetalig in het Engels en Nederlands, ook daarin zijn we creatief.

In mei en juni organiseren we de eerste drie bijeenkomsten over het boek Kapitalistisch Realisme: Is er geen Alternatief? (2009) van Mark Fisher. Wat is dit kapitalistisch realisme? Wat sprak Fisher aan in Nirvana? Zijn er lichtpuntjes in dit soms toch wel sombere boek? En waarom is dit boek zo populair onder jongeren?

Programma:
11 mei: deel 1-3 van Kapitalistisch Realisme (en Nirvana)
1 juni: deel 4-6
22 juni: deel 7-9 (en Spinoza en Marx)

Om mee te doen is het handig het boek aan te schaffen in het Engels of in de vertaling. Bij de bijeenkomsten zelf zijn er ook handouts met passages om samen te analyseren.

The Amsterdam Alternative Academie is a space to think together about our world. Resistance starts with collective consciousness and consciousness starts with analysis. We will discuss texts and others cultural objects on the topics of capitalism, climate crisis, gender, racism, digitization, and also everyday life (because the personal is still political). We do so by taking an intersectional perspective on capitalism, patriarchy, white supremacy and other dominant power structures.

Once, university was a community of equals. We want to return to that ideal (but diverse and intersectional, because of course Medieval ideals also only went so far). AA Academie is an inclusive space. We discuss texts in such way that everyone can join regardless of prior knowledge or education. Every person has creative ideas. Let’s create room for those ideas! The meetings are bilingual in Dutch and English, also in that respect we will be creative.

In May and June we organize the first three meetings on the book Capitalist Realism: Is There No Alternative? (2009) by Mark Fisher. What is capitalist realism? Why did Fisher like Nirvana? Are there hopeful notes in this on the whole somber text? And why is this book currently so popular among young people?

To participate it is useful to get the book in English or the Dutch translation. During the meetings there will also be handouts to analyze passages.
