Line up: The Ban, Yahya Faris, Cathy Grogan

This St. Patrick’s Day weekend, the Liberatory Visions series shifts its focus to Ireland with an evening of film, discussion, music and art.

We’re excited to announce that we will be screening ‘The Ban’ (2024), a BAFTA-longlisted documentary by Roisin Agnew. The film explores the Broadcast Ban on Northern Ireland which was implemented by the British Government in 1988, silencing the voices of IRA members and Sinn Fein. The Ban reflects on the British government's use of the threat of 'terrorism' to justify censorship, drawing timely comparisons with today’s media landscape.

Made against the backdrop of the ongoing Gaza genocide, the film sparks vital discussions on censorship and media complicity. Following the screening, media consultant Yahya Faris will lead a short discussion, drawing on his 10 years of experience with organizations like the Syrian Center for Media and Freedom of Expression and Free Press Unlimited.

Keeping with the Irish theme, Dublin-born, Amsterdam-based artist and DJ Cathy Grogan will guide us through an Irish journey in sound. Expect a fusion of traditional and contemporary Irish music in the Ventilator Bar after the screening, with some familiar drinks and snacks out of Éire!

Irish solidarity with the Palestinian people runs deep, given our shared experience of resisting state-sponsored colonial violence. The Liberatory Visions series sets out to build cross-movement solidarity and so, all proceeds of this event will be split between Cairde na Palaistíne Bhéal Feirste and Palestine Action

19.00: Doors
19.30: Introduction
19.45: Film
20.15: Talk by Yahya Faris
21:00: Music by Cathy Grogan, with drinks and snacks

The title of this event ‘Let the People Sing’ is a reference to the fifth album by Irish folk and rebel band The Wolfe Tones.

This event is part of Liberatory Visions, an event series exploring themes of freedom, resistance and liberation through independent film, talks and workshops. Our hope is for the series to inspire cross-movement solidarity and collaboration. No one is free until we’re all free; we invite attendees to collectively imagine and contribute to a future where this vision is a reality.
