A woman under the influence (1974)
Directed by John Cassavetes
146 minutes // In English
Spellbinding, raw, unbelievably intense. This film makes all other films about human relationships seem like kindergarten fantasies. This is where American cinema had the chance to finally grow up. It is a film which, in its own way, has never been matched. The director John Cassavetes is a monument in cinema, a man who would do commercial junk for Hollywood, but only in order to make his own personal films and uncover the deeper truths about our lives.
Gena Rowlands plays Mabel, a woman trapped into a family situation that she can't handle, which leads to her mental breakdown. Peter Falk (better known as Columbo!) gives the best performance of his career as the husband who doesn't understand why his wife is falling apart. Cassavetes unflinchingly zooms in on the slow decay. Rowland's searing performance is a key reason the film has been declared a "national treasure" by the Library of Congress.
Simply put: This is cinema beyond cinema, it is acting beyond acting.
