Cinema of the Dam’d is pleased to present a 16 week series of new work by emerging female filmmakers. Every month, Women’s Work will focus on a different theme. The first section, New Narratives, looks at the best in cinematic storytelling. We close out the month with the Dutch premiere of Lila Aviles' debut drama The Chambermaid (La Camarista).
Eve (Gabriela Cartol) is the chambermaid of the 16th floor of the luxurious Hotel Presidente in Mexico City. The job requires her to be deferential to guests and to take on endless shifts of folding laundry, scrubbing toilets, and hoovering floors. Although Eve’s working life is contained within the hotel’s hallways, she is resilient, quietly testing the limits of her assigned role. She powers through the daily tasks and ventures into ambiguous relations with colleagues, determined to iron out problems.
A subtle character study inspired by photographer and artist Sophie Calles’ work, Lila Avilés' debut feature explores the “staff only” side of the service industry. Anchored by Cartol's nuanced performance and its closely-observed gestures, La Camarista presents an intimate and empathetic view of what it takes to work in a world where there are no shortcuts. Directed by Lila Avilés, 2018, Mexico, 102 minutes. In Spanish with English subtitles.
