Over de kleur van de stad

Beste mensen (english version below)

English version

Dear people,
Wonderful you are all here with musical colors, for multicolored is what we need more then ever in this city. At rapid speed we see the grey monotony of 5-star hotels, expensive coffee & shopping malls and facilities for tourists increase and the colorful free zones of Amsterdam are blown away.

With the disappearing of the Tabakspanden, de Spuistraat turns into a colorless block of stones in a row. With the disappearance of the Valreep, the East of Amsterdam lost the colorful cultural dynamics. In the last months the cultural free haven ADM is under serious attack and the inhabitants are fighting for its preservation.

We are dealing with a crooked property speculator, who will pocket 80 million euro of community money, if the city of Amsterdam doesn't pay attention.
This did not cost him any effort other then leaning back in a comfy chair for 18 years.

But as long as we are still there, we will pick up the hatchet and fight all we can to prevent this.
Not solely in the courtroom, not solely in the lobby with the city of Amsterdam, not solely with publicity, but also in the street, and also, as Robodock once stated, with cultural self-defence
And in the same 18 years, a colorful group of 130 free thinking, self organizing doers, artists and epicureans have realized a special social-cultural experiment, which was not only the most relevant development in the 50 year history of the ADM-wharf, but also enjoys a worldwide acknowledgment from Burning Man to Oerol, from Macau to Berlin.

The fact that freespaces like ADM, Friekens, Bajesdorp, Schijnheilig and many others are an inspiration for new social and cultural initiatives and ideas did not surpass the municipality of Amsterdam. Because the politicians are worried too, lately we hear them say more often that “Amsterdam needs freespaces”, but also “should Amsterdam allow free market economy to do as it pleases, real artists will disappear.”

And so it is!

Because freespaces are the superchargers of society, they provide inspiration and physical space for experiment, for reflecting and criticising accepted political conduct.
And yes, evicting valued freespaces for speculative profit, will lead to a city of slogans, logos, labels and capital, where only money rules, without color, content, substance or necessary pluralism.

Because we do want a colorful city. A city with a place for everyone. Despite their social background. Where everyone can perform their art or activity Despite their cultural background
Where everyone can achieve in their own way. In independence and in free choice. A colorful city needs the unexpected, the uncontrolled, needs new input, and exactly THIS gives the city its color, dynamics and vitality. Because the colorless monotony leads to the sameness which no Amsterdam-r likes.

The fun fact is: NOBODY disagrees with this. But then how is it possible, despite the awareness and good intentions, the city of Amsterdam acts, choses and decides so differently?
The sad result is in my opinion, unwanted social and cultural oppression.

In the year 2015 we would like to cause a revolution on this front:

We are asking the municipality of Amsterdam to take a 360 degrees turn in the thought process.
Chose to have freespaces in Amsterdam.
Appoint al least 10 big areas in the suburbs for freespaces. Appoint at least 10 locations in city “inside the ring(road)” for freespaces.
And help realize the subcultural Stelling (= defence line) of Amsterdam
Create affordable cultural work- and living spaces
-places that can be used to experiment with contrariness and civil disobedience,
-places that provide a sharp edge, that keeps the city fresh and alert,
-places that interact with the city and make a valuable contribution.

Because a city that believes in itself, should cherish its subcultures.
Call a halt to the social and cultural oppression of freespaces in Amsterdam and the Netherlands!

For now: dance vitally and loud with THIS in the back of your mind.
